SoonerCon 8 Flyers

SoonerCon 8 was November 20-21-22, 1992.  Here's a single-sided letter-size flyer and the legal-size flyer.
Note the depiction of Boomer, SoonerCon's first mascot, in a space-age wheelchair above.
And on this flyer Boomer's a cop-on-skates, I guess.
See you next time.  Don't forget to head to the Soonercon website for this year's spiffy edition.  Soonercon 31 ... who'd've thunk it?

See ya next time!

It's Full of Bubbas!

SoonerCon 2010 was subtitled "A Bubba Odyssey," what with a Yard Dog Press 15th Anniversary celebration and our guest, Joltin' Joe Lansdale.
Here's a flyer, featuring art by the great John Kaufmann, our artist guest.  Yes, we misspelled his last name on the flyer.  But NOT in the Program Book!

Dealers Packet for SoonerCon 2006

Good ol' Jerry Wall, owner of Atomic Comics, was nagged by yours truly and John Hughes to put on a regional sci-fi convention. After a few years of hard work and planning (and permission to use the name), SoonerCon returned in 2006.

Here's the Dealers Packet.  Did you find any treasures?

PS beginning this date, the blog header art has been redesigned to included the new (2023) Soonercon logo.  For the purposes of history, below is the previous header.
See ya!

Disco Dance by ECU Starbase!

This event, about this time in 1979, was instigated by ECU Starbase, a STAR TREK club at ECU in Ada.
The above is from the Ada Evening News of February 14, 1979.
This photo is from the same general time.  Weren't these folks all young and full of vinegar!?!  See ya next time, fellow voyagers in time!

Merry Christmas from STAR OKC

STAR OKC had its 1987 Christmas Party on December 10. One of the annual rituals was the awarding of various prizes. Some honors were voted upon, some were matters of record.
Good ol' Lionel Lenoir's money-raking for the club was a hard number.

"Best Galactic Gazette Cover" was voted on.  Is it any wonder that our own Kevin Hopkins emerged the bloodied-but-unbowed victor?  He provided art for April's and August's covers.

And he responded with a nice note:
I won the award for "Best GG Contributor." Shucks, folks, I'm speechless!
Unfortunately, these are the only winners of 1987 for which we have records.  See you next year!

STAR 2000

These two items document our continued desire to acquire new blood.
The above is a flyer from 2000.  I still think the rocket logo is pretty nifty.
And the above snippet is from the August 5, 2000 Oklahoman.

Remember, every day can begin a new era of fandom, if you want it to!  But PS don't try to use those websites or email addresses!

See ya next time.

SoonerCon 2008's Pocket Program

SoonerCon 2008, "Pieces of '08," was held June 6-7-8, 2008, at the Biltmore. Here's the Pocket Program:

You can credit our wonderful Mrs Burrows for this piece.  But you can blame the whole "Pieces of '08" name on me.

See ya, fellow fans and fanettes!

SoonerCon 2009 Flyers

The third of the resurrected SoonerCons, SoonerCon 2009 was held at the Biltmore on June 5-6-7.
Above is the one I designed.  Wasn't used.  Too busy, huh!  (However, I am proud to have come up with our theme's wording, "Slideways in Time."  The punster strikes again!

This is the first version of our bookmark flyer.

Above is the second version of the 2009 bookmark flyer.

See you next time, campers!

The January 2003 GALACTIC GAZETTE

It was short and semi-sweet.
Mike Moery was GG editor for 2002, and he produced this inaugural issue for the new year 2003.
Personally I thought the classification of folks into the categrories listed above was a little TOO cutesy and precious.  The joke in the indicia about Poe, Carrol, or living in Hawaii has a long history, and may have originated with Tom Koszoru or ... ?  Do you know?
Outgoing 2002 Prez Mr G Burton reflects on the previous year.
And above is notes from the previous meeting, which also elected 2003 officers.  2003 President-elect Karla Jarrett is still about, having recently acquired a new job as a counselor.  That Vp guy, you just can't get rid of! And the money man, Mr B, still drops in at times to SoonerCon (and the STAR OKC FB page).

See you next time, fellow sci-fi veterans!

SoonerCon 2007 Business Cards

How many of these were handed out, I dunno.

The saucer in the above version is, of course, snagged from Earth vs. the Flying Saucers.
For the lower one, I took a Paul Cherry drawing of Boomer and supered the saucer over him.

How many of you were there?

What to Do at SoonerCon 5

If you take your time machine back to SoonerCon 5, here's some of what was going on November 17-18-19, 1989:
Above is the Japanimation schedule.  STAR member Bob Higgs is credited as the Video Chair for the Con.  No surviving records indicate if Bob was also in charge of the Japanimation room.

Above are the front-and-back of the gaming schedule.  Paul "Pablo" Stewart was in charge of Games.
And this is the Video Schedule.

Don't forget, the year 1989 also introduced dat cute li'l dragon Boomer, SoonerCon's only official mascot, designed and crafted by Kevin Hopkins!

Don't forget you can click on the topic "SoonerCon 5" at the left to see other relics of the con, including the entire Program Book.  (But there's still more to come ... in the future!)

See you next time, fellow fans!

The Other Flyer for SoonerCon 2!

Earlier in the year I posted some docs from SoonerCon 2, October 25-26, 1986, including this flyer:
That was the first flyer.  This is the second version:
In case you wondered about our charity participation, we gave $180 to the Oklahoma Pediatric Cancer Association.  And if you wondered how I know this, then you don't know me very well!

See you another time, fellow fans!

Shed Your Stereotypes!

This article and sidebar of "lingo" are from the September 14, 1986 Norman Transcript.  Of course, we had an in.  Check the byline!  That's the good ol' ThunderChief hisself!
The photogged nerd in all his glory is SoonerCon co-founder Mike Hodge.  Also quoted is another SoonerCon co-founder, Tamara Hodge.
Don't forget the mighty Syd Henderson!  Also mentioned is Claire Stephens, longtime STAR OKC associate, NOSFA member, and toiler in the Central OKC Fan salt mines.

Awww, didn't Larry do us proud?

See ya later, dudes and dudettes!  Don't forget to saddle up for SoonerCon 30 -- click the link in our own sidebar!

January 2005 - A Portent of Death and Fandom Resurrection!

This is the January 2005 Galactic Gazette.
As converted online from PDF to JPG "free," hence the semi-sketchy colors.
STAR's new Prez for 2005 was Lynn Yates.

These two pages are some yucks from longtime STARs Mike and Tamara Hodge.
If the "Big Howdy" from our new Prez didn't make the status of STAR OKC plain enough, you can infer more from my minutes of the December meeting and "election."
This DVD review from yours semi-truly wrapped up the January GG.  How could we know how many-or-few issues were left!

PS the "resurrection" is a semi-cheat, because just a year later SoonerCon returned.  Hooray!

Stay tuned, campers!  If you can stay awake!
