The Other Flyer for SoonerCon 2!

Earlier in the year I posted some docs from SoonerCon 2, October 25-26, 1986, including this flyer:
That was the first flyer.  This is the second version:
In case you wondered about our charity participation, we gave $180 to the Oklahoma Pediatric Cancer Association.  And if you wondered how I know this, then you don't know me very well!

See you another time, fellow fans!

Shed Your Stereotypes!

This article and sidebar of "lingo" are from the September 14, 1986 Norman Transcript.  Of course, we had an in.  Check the byline!  That's the good ol' ThunderChief hisself!
The photogged nerd in all his glory is SoonerCon co-founder Mike Hodge.  Also quoted is another SoonerCon co-founder, Tamara Hodge.
Don't forget the mighty Syd Henderson!  Also mentioned is Claire Stephens, longtime STAR OKC associate, NOSFA member, and toiler in the Central OKC Fan salt mines.

Awww, didn't Larry do us proud?

See ya later, dudes and dudettes!  Don't forget to saddle up for SoonerCon 30 -- click the link in our own sidebar!

Pure Con Extract!

SoonerCon 2 was October 25-26, 1986. This was only 4 1/2 months after SoonerCon 1!

Crazy?  Perhaps.  But it was because we wanted to establish SoonerCon as a fall convention.  With that goal in mind, we certainly couldn't wait until fall 1987, more than a year after SoonerCon 1!
To ease the insanity, SoonerCon 2 was a two-day con.  Some of you may have disbelieved me when I told you "Pure Con Extract" was the con's subtitle.  That referred to its two-day status, and was concocted by the devilish mind of David Means, chair of number two.

Much of 2's ConComm carried over from #1, but leadership must needs be different.  Click on the "SoonerCon 2" or "1986" or SoonerCon 1" search-topic tabs on the left for more info!
SoonerCon 2 is the only one held at the Skirvin Plaza.  Check out our hotel bill.

That's it for now.  See you next time for more Fan Fun Memories!

SoonerCon 1 Synopsi

I don't know or care if "synopsi" is a valid word. We historians just pass on the stuff scraped from the bottom of history's shoe.

As you should know, SoonerCon 1 was June 6-7-8, 1986.  Check out the topics list along the side for earlier posts.  And don't worry, many more scrapings remain!

SoonerCon 1's ConComm and 1st Press Release

BOTH THESE DOCUMENTS ARE FROM 1985.

These are (some of) the folk you can blame for SoonerCon 1, which took place in 1986. I've redacted the phone numbers. Handwritten notes (not by me) are on the reverse.

Here's the press release.  For those of us in the know, it's a simple task to adjudge the words as crafted by later ThunderChief and future TREK Hound Larry Nemecek.

See ya next time for another dip into the churning waters of OK fandom history!

The March-April 1986 Galactic Gazette -- Winding Up for SoonerCon 1

Our cover art is once again by the estimable Bob Higgs.

We spent $315 on transportation for our Toastmaster, Tom Disch.
We had a fundraiser for the Medieval Faire, our main big push to acquire bucks to pay for SoonerCon 1, coming up on June 6-8, 1986.

Denise Rexroat give a Con Report on Star Fest 86, in Denver.
The final page is a brilliant send-up of Stephen R Donaldson's Covenant the Unbeliever books.  One guess as to its author.  While you're guessing, marvel at the hi-tech text, courtesy of the Commodore MPS-801 dot-matrix printer.

Thanks for stopping by!

February, 1986 Galactic Gazette

In February, 1986, SoonerCon 1 was still being planned.

This cover is a parody of the Dewar's Profile ads.

Mike Powell was the newly elected President.

Tamara and Mike Hodge were STAR OKC Treasurer and SoonerCon Chair, respectively.
This page begins a continuation of a long saga by Bob Higgs, called Remember the Heroes.

The above page of filler by yours truly is one of the few products of my typing for which I cannot imagine a purpose.  Just filler.  Bleahh.

Sorry to leave you with "Bleahh," but that's the final page of the February, 1986 Galactic Gazette.

See you next time.

SoonerCon 2 Pocket Program, Flyer, Questionnaire

Here are the last of the items from SoonerCon 2, held in October, 1986.

SoonerCon 2 was held only a few months after SoonerCon 1 so that a "standard" date for the Con could be established.  We wanted to have a late fall/early winter con, and it just wouldn't do to go a year until the following fall.

So people dashed around like mad to have  a SECOND SoonerCon about four months after the first.  This was the main reason for only having two "official" days -- Saturday and Sunday.  Also why this con was promoted as "Pure Con Extract" by Con Chair David Means.

I really don't know the source for the lab-rat-in-spacesuit concept for the badges.

Even though the "Friday" schedule -- nothing but video -- begins with "10AM," I am pretty sure that this room started at  10PM, and then ran 24 hours until Sunday afternoon.

Here's the questionnaire distributed to con attendees in the hopes of defining our demographics/audience.  Maybe someday we will run across the findings from these.

Next time, in a month or so ... SoonerCon 3.
