SoonerCon 5 Badges and Pocket Program

Yup, that's what is in this post.  Soonercon 5 was November 17-19, 1989.
My badge.  This might have been one of the years in which I sold stuff in the Dealers Room.
Scooter had a STAFF ribbon, but his role is not mentioned in the Program Book, so I don't know where he helped.

You can check out other posts -- "SoonerCon 5" in the SEARCH BY TOPIC bar -- to learn more.  One thing of note is that SoonerCon 5 was the debut of SoonerCon mascot Boomer, created by Kevin Hopkins.

See you next time, fellow fans!

What to Do at SoonerCon 5

If you take your time machine back to SoonerCon 5, here's some of what was going on November 17-18-19, 1989:
Above is the Japanimation schedule.  STAR member Bob Higgs is credited as the Video Chair for the Con.  No surviving records indicate if Bob was also in charge of the Japanimation room.

Above are the front-and-back of the gaming schedule.  Paul "Pablo" Stewart was in charge of Games.
And this is the Video Schedule.

Don't forget, the year 1989 also introduced dat cute li'l dragon Boomer, SoonerCon's only official mascot, designed and crafted by Kevin Hopkins!

Don't forget you can click on the topic "SoonerCon 5" at the left to see other relics of the con, including the entire Program Book.  (But there's still more to come ... in the future!)

See you next time, fellow fans!

You can meet our 1989 Art Show chief at this year's SoonerCon to ask him all about it!

Complete with annotations from yours truly, above is the overall schedule which departments were supposed to toe their lines!

See you on the other side of SoonerCon 30: Heroes Homecoming!  For all info, click on the SoonerCon link to the right, under "Fannish Fiends and Friends."

1989 - SoonerCon 5 Program Book, Pages 35-44

The rest of the SoonerCon 5 Program Book, November 17-19, 1989.

The Reverend Oral Love was a persona adopted by David Means, who now rejoices in a role on the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Science Fiction & Fantasy Society.

The top image by Kevin Hopkins ... the others?

The bottom-right image is by Keith Berdak ... what of the others?

Let's assume that the WorldCon bid on the bottom half of the page above was a jest ....
This post wraps up the Program Book from 1989.  All hail to Bill Hodgson, the Program Book chair!

1989 - SoonerCon 5 - Program Book Pages 12-23

Happy New Year!

SoonerCon 5 was held November 17-19, 1989, at the Central Plaza Hotel.  Here are the next dozen or so pages from the Program Book.
Roger Allen was our Fan GOH.
You can tell what role Randy Farran played (get it, played?).
Writer David Brin, booked as a "Special Guest," was a no-show for some reason I don't remember.  Walter Jon Williams was our Writer Guest at the Con.
Richard Arnold, our "Media" guest, is a friend/acquaintance of ThunderChief Larry Nemecek, who wrote the above bio.
 SoonerKin were previous SoonerCon Big-name-Guests.

And with the above centerfold, this installment of the SoonerCon PB closes.  See you around, kiddies!

1989 - SoonerCon 5 - Progam Book Pages 1-11

SoonerCon 5 was held November 17-19, 1989, at the Central Plaza Hotel.  Here are the first 11 pages from the Program Book.

Other OKC fandom notes: NOSFA, the Norman Oklahoma Science Fiction Association, held its first PsurrealCon convention.  Previously, the NOSFA con had been named PseudoCon.  Amazingly enough, yours truly was the one to suggest the new "PsurrealCon" when the chair wanted to change the name, but keep a "P" at the beginning of its name.

1989 was the same year that SoonerCon founders Mike and Tamara Hodge upped anchor.  First stop: New York City.

Also in 1989, STAR member Larry Nemecek took a trip to California and Paramount, including “seven hours with TNG professionals.” This doubtless planted in his mind the treacherous possibility of abandoning his Club for some Paramount job, as he will indeed did in the 1990s.  We still love ya, Larry!

Someday you may learn all about The Okie Horror Picture Show, originally the halftime entertainment for the SoonerCon 5 Costume Contest.

Stay tuned!
