Mini-Con in '84

As everybody knows (or should), NOSFA stands for Norman Oklahoma Science Fiction Association.

They held a one-day Mini-Con on February 18, 1984.

Good ole Kent Cordray is still kickin' about in Oklahoma.  And dear friend CJ Cherryh is ever in our hearts!

I was there, were YOU?

See you in the funny papers!

SoonerCon 5 Badges and Pocket Program

Yup, that's what is in this post.  Soonercon 5 was November 17-19, 1989.
My badge.  This might have been one of the years in which I sold stuff in the Dealers Room.
Scooter had a STAFF ribbon, but his role is not mentioned in the Program Book, so I don't know where he helped.

You can check out other posts -- "SoonerCon 5" in the SEARCH BY TOPIC bar -- to learn more.  One thing of note is that SoonerCon 5 was the debut of SoonerCon mascot Boomer, created by Kevin Hopkins.

See you next time, fellow fans!

November 1983 GALACTIC GAZETTE

In 1983, Paul "Blue Devil" had returned to STAR for awhile.  He was also gracious enough to dive into the crafting of STAR's newsletter, The Galactic Gazette, which had languished earlier that year because the publications guy (that's me) couldn't get anybody to contribute; thus, a one-page "STAR OKC NEWS."

Here's the offering for November, with art and fiction from Paul and other stuff:

The last page, seen directly above, has a nice bit of line art for a club logo, yes?  See you next time!

If It's April, It Must Be PseudoCon

... At least in 1987!

For a little context, PseudoCon was put on by NOSFA, the Norman, Oklahoma Science Fiction Association.  There was another PseudoCon, in 1988, before the name was changed.  Several members of STAR OKC or helpers at SoonerCon were also Normanites, so all of us folks overlapped in a fun way.

PseudoCon was held April 18, 1987, and here is the eight-page Program Book:

(No, I don't have a brother named Mike.  They got my name wrong.)
At least for my TREK panel with Larry, they got my name right!

I can testify that my part at PseudoCon, at least, was a blast.  I got into my Vulcanian garb and pretended to be Spock, while our future ThunderChief Larry played the irascible McCoy.  And we argued -- I mean, debated.  (Another wonderful memory was created before that panel, when Larry was kind enough to stand next to me at the Men's Room sink and direct a hair dryer to dry the glue holding my homemade Vulcan latex ears on!)

See you next time, fellow Oklahoma fans!

Merry Christmas from STAR OKC

STAR OKC had its 1987 Christmas Party on December 10. One of the annual rituals was the awarding of various prizes. Some honors were voted upon, some were matters of record.
Good ol' Lionel Lenoir's money-raking for the club was a hard number.

"Best Galactic Gazette Cover" was voted on.  Is it any wonder that our own Kevin Hopkins emerged the bloodied-but-unbowed victor?  He provided art for April's and August's covers.

And he responded with a nice note:
I won the award for "Best GG Contributor." Shucks, folks, I'm speechless!
Unfortunately, these are the only winners of 1987 for which we have records.  See you next year!

What to Do at SoonerCon 5

If you take your time machine back to SoonerCon 5, here's some of what was going on November 17-18-19, 1989:
Above is the Japanimation schedule.  STAR member Bob Higgs is credited as the Video Chair for the Con.  No surviving records indicate if Bob was also in charge of the Japanimation room.

Above are the front-and-back of the gaming schedule.  Paul "Pablo" Stewart was in charge of Games.
And this is the Video Schedule.

Don't forget, the year 1989 also introduced dat cute li'l dragon Boomer, SoonerCon's only official mascot, designed and crafted by Kevin Hopkins!

Don't forget you can click on the topic "SoonerCon 5" at the left to see other relics of the con, including the entire Program Book.  (But there's still more to come ... in the future!)

See you next time, fellow fans!

The Other Flyer for SoonerCon 2!

Earlier in the year I posted some docs from SoonerCon 2, October 25-26, 1986, including this flyer:
That was the first flyer.  This is the second version:
In case you wondered about our charity participation, we gave $180 to the Oklahoma Pediatric Cancer Association.  And if you wondered how I know this, then you don't know me very well!

See you another time, fellow fans!

Shed Your Stereotypes!

This article and sidebar of "lingo" are from the September 14, 1986 Norman Transcript.  Of course, we had an in.  Check the byline!  That's the good ol' ThunderChief hisself!
The photogged nerd in all his glory is SoonerCon co-founder Mike Hodge.  Also quoted is another SoonerCon co-founder, Tamara Hodge.
Don't forget the mighty Syd Henderson!  Also mentioned is Claire Stephens, longtime STAR OKC associate, NOSFA member, and toiler in the Central OKC Fan salt mines.

Awww, didn't Larry do us proud?

See ya later, dudes and dudettes!  Don't forget to saddle up for SoonerCon 30 -- click the link in our own sidebar!
