SoonerCon 2010 Giveaways

A few times in the early years of the revived Soonercon, we hooked up with Oklahoma City's 92.5 KOMA to give away passes for publicity's sake.

Above is the flyer, featuring great "Bubbas meet 2010" art which was also on the t-shirt.

Here is the text of the letter I dropped off at the KOMA studios, addressed to Lisa Sykes:

Lisa, you can give away the enclosed SoonerCon 2010 tickets ANY WAY you want.  You can keep some for station personnel (if they will be actually USED) or give them all away.  You can use the enclosed Trivia Questions (hope they are easy enough) or make up ANY GIVEAWAYS YOU WANT.
-- much thanks,   Mark Alfred
Sound bites:

I Took the Odyssey! Did YOU?

Yup, as you'll recall, SoonerCon 2010 was called "A Bubba Odyssey."  I suggested it to Jerry as a reference to the film and book 2010: Odyssey Two.  And this was a celebration of a Yard Dog Press anniversary, hence the bubbas.
This is from the June 2, 2010 Oklahoma Gazette.
The above little blurb is from the June 2 Oklahoman.
The column above is from the June 3 Oklahoman.
And this coverage is from the Oklahoman for Friday, June 4.

It was great hosting Joe Lansdale and the other guests!  See ya in the funny papers.

More Bubbas!

Yes, SoonerCon 2010 was called "2010: A Bubba Odyssey." It was June 4-5-6, held at the Biltmore at I-40 and Meridian. Here's the Pocket Program:

And to refresh your memory, here's the primo John Kaufman art which was also featured on the t-shirt:
See ya later, Space Gators!

Time-Travellin' to 2010!

Here is some of the press generated to drum up the fever for SoonerCon 2010.  When we decided to help celebrate Yard Dog Press's 15th anniversary, one of us geniuses on the ConComm decided our con theme MUST be "A Bubba Odyssey," riffing off Clarke's 2001 sequel 2010 of course.  AND since we had joltin' Joe Lansdale, author of (among others) Bubba Ho-Tep.
Above is from the June 2, 2010 Gazette.
The above squib is from the June 2, 2010 Oklahoman.
This one's from the June 3rd Oklahoman.
The one above appeared in the June 4, 2010 Oklahoman.  Thanks to our good friend Matthew Price for plugging us then and later!
And re-presented here is the "Bubba flyer," featuring art by John Kaufman.

See you next time, fellow bubbas and bubbettes!

It's Full of Bubbas!

SoonerCon 2010 was subtitled "A Bubba Odyssey," what with a Yard Dog Press 15th Anniversary celebration and our guest, Joltin' Joe Lansdale.
Here's a flyer, featuring art by the great John Kaufmann, our artist guest.  Yes, we misspelled his last name on the flyer.  But NOT in the Program Book!

The Rest of SoonerCon 10's Program Book

Yup, here it is.

As you may deduce from the back cover, this was the last year to bear the cognomen "SoonerCon" followed by a date.  Beginning with the 2011 con, we numbered 'em.

Check back next time for who-knows-what from the vaults!

SoonerCon 2010 Program Book, Part 3

The next nine images. BTW, SoonerCon 2010 was June 4-5-6 of that fabled year.
We all know this illustrious Toastmaster!

Some of these fine folks still haunt the hallways of contemporary SoonerCons.
PS evidently the above full-page ad was part of a successful campaign, because WorldCon was indeed held in San Antonio in 2013.

Only about another 10 pages to go to wrap up this PB.

More of the SoonerCon 2010 Program Book

When I called the contents of the previous post "the first 11 pages," I was of course counting the covers as pages. But I was wrong, that was still only TEN images. As they say on the other side of the divide, mea culpa!

Here are the next few pages, through the color insert.

We continue to enjoy the mutual benefits of swapping Program Book ads with FenCon.

Joe Lansdale is a sweetheart of a guy, author of many fabulous tomes, including the Hap and Leonard series, and the nigh-scriptural revelation that is Bubba Ho-Tep
Check out the wonderful art from these two wise guys in the color section below.
Mr Nemecek has yet to deny that he is Jonny Quest's father.  Enquiring minds may draw their own conclusions!

My grandchild Jazra owns a copy of the "Coppertone dragon" print, autographed to her by the inimitable artist!

Anybody that can draw such a dino-cowgirl is A-OK by us, podner!

That's it for now, see you soon for the third installment (of probably four) from SoonerCon 2010!
