The January 1991 GALACTIC GAZETTE

On page 2 you can read the officers for 1991.  There's lots of coverage of the upcoming ThunderCon 1.

The "ThunderPage" logo at the top of the page was my own device ...

The poor contrast of some images is acknowledged, but that's all we got!  PS yes, that's Gerald "Captain Coconut" Burton making a cameo appearance in the cartoon on the last page.

The original is two columns on a vertical 14-x-17-inch sheet.  The Teddy Harvia cartoon above takes up about a third of the second page.  No, there's not a caption.  Why don't you write one?

Howdy friends, here are some scans from ThunderCon 1, which took place at OKC's Central Plaza Hotel (now it's a Clarion of some kind).

Yes, that's a very busy flyer.  And if I had me say, I would have pointed out that on the front side, "make-up" appears twice, once with the correct hyphen and once without.  You'll also see that the Tentative Guest was emphatically scratched out.

Courtesy of our lamented brother Paul Cherry, here is his badge.

I was Video Chair, so you may blame me for the eclectic schedule.  Yes, it was typed (by me) and dummied up with boffo art by Kevin Hopkins, resident artistic genius.

Those of a certain age will recall the OTHER name for ThunderCon:  LMC, "Larry's Media Con."

Nuthin' But a Bunch o' Trekkies!

Well, I was going to post a bunch of scans from 1991's ThunderCon 1.  But the thumb drive ate 'em.

Until then, here's a preview, courtesy of the Dallas Morning News.

This was in the Saturday, June 1st edition.  This means the AP writer, one Ellen Knickmeyer, filed her story Friday night.  She has since become an international writer for the WSJ, working from Africa and the Middle East.

Fans Dianna Hopkins, Mike Ferguson, and Kimber Civyer are quoted.  To be honest, it was not until the time of this post that I read down the article and noticed that my table in the Dealers' Room was mentioned.

I hope to bring you more soon from 1991's ThunderCon 1, spearheaded by ThunderChief Larry Nemecek.

STAR OKC Flyers from the 1970s

These are from the 1970s.  I can advise that "Cpt. Paul Marek" is alive in the OKC area, but wisely keeps a low profile at SoonerCons and other places hoping to avoid having his memories solicited.

Suzanne Romero, later Zann Jones, and later not, was a big pusher of the early STAR also.

The March-April 1986 Galactic Gazette -- Winding Up for SoonerCon 1

Our cover art is once again by the estimable Bob Higgs.

We spent $315 on transportation for our Toastmaster, Tom Disch.

 We had a fundraiser for the Medieval Faire, our main big push to acquire bucks to pay for SoonerCon 1, coming up on June 6-8, 1986.

Denise Rexroat give a Con Report on Star Fest 86, in Denver. 

The final page is a brilliant send-up of Stephen R Donaldson's Covenant the Unbeliever books.  One guess as to its author.  While you're guessing, marvel at the hi-tech text, courtesy of the Commodore MPS-801 dot-matrix printer.
