SoonerCon 1's ConComm and 1st Press Release

BOTH THESE DOCUMENTS ARE FROM 1985.

These are (some of) the folk you can blame for SoonerCon 1, which took place in 1986. I've redacted the phone numbers. Handwritten notes (not by me) are on the reverse.

Here's the press release.  For those of us in the know, it's a simple task to adjudge the words as crafted by later ThunderChief and future TREK Hound Larry Nemecek.

See ya next time for another dip into the churning waters of OK fandom history!

M.A.G.I.C. Piglets from 1991

Somebody roamed the halls and lurked through some parties at ThunderCon 1 and reaped a bunch of comments that sound pretty silly when quoted out of context.

They probably sounded even sillier IN context!  (As you should know, ThunderCon 1 was held May 31-June 1-2, 1991 at the glitzy Central Plaza Hotel in OKC.)

Don't forget to investigate the topic "ThunderCon" for more fun facts about LMC!

The Rest of SoonerCon 10's Program Book

Yup, here it is.

As you may deduce from the back cover, this was the last year to bear the cognomen "SoonerCon" followed by a date.  Beginning with the 2011 con, we numbered 'em.

Check back next time for who-knows-what from the vaults!

SoonerCon 2010 Program Book, Part 3

The next nine images. BTW, SoonerCon 2010 was June 4-5-6 of that fabled year.
We all know this illustrious Toastmaster!

Some of these fine folks still haunt the hallways of contemporary SoonerCons.
PS evidently the above full-page ad was part of a successful campaign, because WorldCon was indeed held in San Antonio in 2013.

Only about another 10 pages to go to wrap up this PB.

More of the SoonerCon 2010 Program Book

When I called the contents of the previous post "the first 11 pages," I was of course counting the covers as pages. But I was wrong, that was still only TEN images. As they say on the other side of the divide, mea culpa!

Here are the next few pages, through the color insert.

We continue to enjoy the mutual benefits of swapping Program Book ads with FenCon.

Joe Lansdale is a sweetheart of a guy, author of many fabulous tomes, including the Hap and Leonard series, and the nigh-scriptural revelation that is Bubba Ho-Tep
Check out the wonderful art from these two wise guys in the color section below.
Mr Nemecek has yet to deny that he is Jonny Quest's father.  Enquiring minds may draw their own conclusions!

My grandchild Jazra owns a copy of the "Coppertone dragon" print, autographed to her by the inimitable artist!

Anybody that can draw such a dino-cowgirl is A-OK by us, podner!

That's it for now, see you soon for the third installment (of probably four) from SoonerCon 2010!

The Beginning of the SoonerCon 2010 Program Book

The first 11 pages of the Program Book.
Our theme was Bubbas, Southern-fried Culture in general, and zombies.  And in honor of the 2001 sequel 2010: Odyssey Two, I came up with the superimposition of zombies on the eye-camera of HAL, for the cover art.
Our charity was Infant Crisis Services.  As of now, we don't have a record of the amount we ended up donating to their worthy cause.
And it was my brilliant idea for the page numbers to be "backlit" by 2001's monolith.

Note the "Thank ya very much."  Takin' Care of Business, baby!

SoonerCon 2010 was held June 4-5-6 at the Biltmore.  Joe Lansdale was our writer GOH, and John E Kaufman was our artist GOH.  And artist John Lucas, along with Larry Nemecek and the UFP.

More to come!
